FSS/WWW - Die Zeit der Ultima Online Veteranen ist angebrochen
05.09.2004, 10:48 Uhr
"What is Rebirth?
Rebirth is a historically accurate recreation of Ultima Online from 1997 to early 1998.
So, how is that any different than UO today?
Completely different, a totally different playing experience, different pvp templates, etc.
What is Notoriety?
Notoriety is the fame/karma scale that was used during this time frame. It works on a +125 -125 scale with Great Lord being the highest title and Dread Lord being the lowest. You can gain 1 point every 15 mintues by performing various good actions like helping NPCs or killing evil doers and monsters. However you can loose notoriety as fast as you can perform negative actions such as stealing or killing a blue.
Players who are Dishonorable appear grey, and players who are Dastardly appear red, HOWEVER these players can freely enter town and CANNOT be attacked. If they are attacked, the guards will treat them as they would a blue player and defend them. Note that it may be impossible to tell a CRIMINAL who can be attacked in town from a DISHONORABLE who cannot. It′s usually not a good idea to attack people in town unless you KNOW they are criminals.
Great Lord/Lady - Highest level noto is hued blue and can get and wear a virtue shield
Nobel Lord/Lady - Blue - can wear a virtue shield but can’t get one from virtue guards
Lord - Blue
Noble - Blue
Honorable - Blue
No-title - Blue
Dishonorable – Grey - can be freely attacked and killed outside of town without loosing noto.
Dastardly – Red - can enter town and can be freely killed outside of town
Dark Lord/Lady - can not enter town, will be guardwacked and must be resed by a red healer.
Evil Lord/Lady - can not enter town, will be guardwacked and must be resed by a red healer.
Dread Lord/Lady - Lowest noto and can not enter town, will be guardwacked and must be resed by a red healer.
All reds can also be resurrected at the Chaos Shrine (close to Wind.)
How come I start with almost nothing?
This is how it was, 100gp, 3-4 of each reg and a few scrolls. This is historically accurate.
That sucks, how am I supposed to build a character then?
Make a crafter, a bard or a tamer to build your funds up. Gaining wealth in Britannia is as easy as logging on.
Why can′t I lock my skills/stats?
There were no skill locks in this time period. That means we use a system commonly known as atrophy. Rather than having direct control over which skills and stats you gain or loose, the game determains which will be lost by how long it has been since you have used them.
For this reason, attaining a 7x GM is quite difficult, and keeping it that way can be equally challenging. This system requires that you anticipate which skills you may use at any time. Most 7x templates will fail if they do not include wrestling and magic resist, since you often cannot control when these skills will be used. When atrophy happens, one of your lesser used skills will simply drop when the other raises. This will become more frequent as you gain more total skill points.
To prevent a skill from atrophying, simply use it before begining training in another skill. For example, before training in swords today, you might want to cast lightning on yourself. This will count as a "use" for both Magery and Magic Resistance.
Tell me about the trade skills than during this time period.
Blacksmithy is skill based as it is today, there is only one type of metal (iron) and at 99+ skill level is when you start leaving your makers mark on exceptional gear.
Bow craft/fletching is also skill based, however your makers mark will always appear on an exceptional made item
Alchemy is also skill based, pretty much the same as it is today except there are no kegs.
Cartography is skill based also, however it is a pretty useless skill due to no t-maps.
Inscription is skill based as well. You will need to have the spell in your spell book in order to scribe it.
Tailoring, tinkering and cooking and carpentry are all % based skill which means you have a chance to make anything at any skill level but your success chance is based on your skill, also note there are no exceptional quarter staffs. Or player crafted house addons.
I am a gm miner and all I am getting is iron! Where is the other ores?
During this time frame there was only iron ore. However you can purchase different hued armors off of NPCs. This makes buying, selling, and collecting more enjoyable and interactive.
I am a lumberjack, how do I make boards?
There were no boards in this period of UO, there are only logs. Yes we are aware of the irony in players starting with boards yet being unable to make them. This is consitent with the time period. Go figure.
How is taming different?
There is no follower limit, you can have as many creatures as you feel you can control at any time.
Combat:
How is combat different here?
There are no damage modifying skills during this time frame other than tactics which means, Lumberjacking, eval, anatomy, etc do NOT add any extra damage during combat, so having those skills in a pvp template is useless and a waste of space. Also there was no meditation during this timeframe either or any skills or items that decreased or increased your mana regeneration. The cool thing about this is you can wear full plate and have the same regeneration as someone nude.
What is different about archery?
Archery during this time frame was a very useful skill, you can shoot while moving, however when you have a bow equipped you have a much greater chance of getting hit by someone attacking you, it is more of a secondary skill than a primary.
What about the other combat skills?
All the other combat skills function pretty much the same way they do today, Maces do stam damage, etc.
Are there special moves?
There are no special moves during this time frame; actual skill is more important.
What weapons can I poison?
You can poison any 1 handed slashing or fencing weapon.
Chaos and Order
During this time frame there were no chaos or order guilds, what determined your alignment was your shield. Chaos and Order can freely attack each other as long as they have their shields equipped however they will still appear blue, but can be freely engaged in town. Another neat thing about chaos and order shields is that you can cast while having one equipped, this makes parrying a very useful skill for an order or chaos guard.
Spell damage in town
As long as you are under guard protection, there will be no spell damage unless you cast it on yourself. This includes guild wars and O/C fights.
Magic Resist
Magic resist during this timeframe was an extremely useful skill. Resistance chance was based on spell damage not the actual spell so a gm mages lightening bolt could possibly be harder to resist than a newbie’s ebolt.
Reactive armor
Can be cast on anyone, but please note that casting on Red noto′d people will result in a loss of noto for yourself. The percent reflected back is based on your magery. You can only reflect physical damage, not magical.
Magic reflect
Magic reflect is good for one reflect of any offensive spell at all magery levels. A newbie′s magic arrow will knock down a GM mage′s reflect as will a GM Mage′s Flamestrike on a newbie’s reflect.
How is housing different?
During this time frame you can own as many houses as you can afford, however ownership is based on your key, and keys are not newbied. The good news is you can have vendors on any houses and can keep your key relatively secure on your vendor outside your door. There are No lockdowns or secures, no house banning or friends and nothing will decay inside your house except death robes and body parts that are not in containers.
I can’t find any beetles to ride!
The only mounts during this timeframe are horses and the only place you can find horses are in the wild.
My horse is bugged and laggy!
During this timeframe no one rode mounts except for transportation due to the lag from low speed connections of the time. To simulate this, mounts are generally slower on Rebirth than other shards, making them feel slightly "laggy." Mounts are only good for transportation and are not recommended for use in combat due to their acceleration lag.
Bounty System:
What Bounty System?
When an innocent is murderer by another player, they will receive a prompt asking them to place a bounty on the head of their killer. Even if they press cancel or enter 0, their killed will loose notoriety. This the victum chooses to place a bounty on the head of the killer, money will be transfered out of the victum′s bank box. The killer will appear on the bounty boards world-wide.
How do I claim a bounty?
If you would like to claim a bounty, you must take the head carved from the body of the murderer to a town guard (in any town). If the head is less than 1 real world day old, you will receive the bounty for the killer and they will be removed from the bounty boards.
Is there statloss?
Yes, statloss for murderers depends on how high their bounty is. While the exact scale is not public knowledge, here is a piece of it which is known. 5,000 to 14,999 gp = 1%, 15,000 to 29,999 = 2%. This is percentage of all stats and skills. However, for every real-world day which the character does not murder an innocent player, their bounty decreases by 100gp.
Wow dude that blows....
Not really. Consider first that 5,000gp is enough for a medium boat, a tent, or half of a small house. Also consider that a bounty can be claimed at any time, possibly before it reaches the level where statloss applies.
Why have stat loss at all?
While it seems to kind of suck at first, statloss plays a major role in balancing the Red vs. Blue population of the shard. Without statloss, there would be little reason to stay blue.
What about a red′s bank box?
Players Dark Lord/Lady and below may not go into town and there is no town in Buc′s den. There is little likely hood that a player of such low notoriety could find a bank where they could access their bank box. HOWEVER, if they did find such a place they might be disappointed. After someone has murdered a sufficient number of people, and aquired a sufficently high bounty, the town guards will claim the murderer′s bank box as part of the player′s bounty. All gold will be added to the player′s bounty and items will be liquidated and their value added. Storing things in your bank box when you plan on murdering may not be a wise choice.
Stat loss still blows...
Well, if you think so, maybe it does. But it′s here to stay. Just be blue and fight in guild wars... Or hunt the reds with balls enough to put something on the line.
Corpse Looting?
As was the time period, all corses are grey and anyone can freely loot them.
Party System and/or Chat System?
There was no party system, and there was no chat system. So we don′t have them either.
Furs?
Yeah we′ve got furs. They′re useless but we have them.
Housing System:
Housing on Rebirth follows the true "Old Rules" which would be better named "No Rules." Houses do not have owners or lock downs or secures or anything. No items will decay off the floor of a house, so the only storage limit is what can physically fit inside it. You can probably fit more stuff in a small house on rebirth than a 2-story with lockdowns and secures. The only items which decay on the floor of a house are: Body Parts (arms/legs/torsos/heads) and "Death Robes".
What about keys?
The only way to control access to your house is with house keys. Keys are NOT newbied so they WILL be on your corpse when you die and they CAN be stolen. Rebirth also has key rings.
How do I keep my key safe then?
Keep it in the bank unless you are coming or going. Or keep it on a vendor, see below.
What if I′m red? I don′t have a bank..
Player Vendors allow you to keep key rings on them with no price set. If you get a key ring, and a vendor, and put the key on the ring and the ring in the vendor, then no one can buy or access your key except you. You can freely remove the key from the vendor and use it before replacing it. Becareful no one is waiting to steal it after you take it off the vendor though!
So... pretty insecure then, huh?
Yes, housing is a dangerous business, thieves will often hide for hours waiting for you to return and open the door allowing them to run inside, or steal the key right out of your pack, Or kill you and take it. If I was you, I′d place my house in a very remote area. And never carry a rune to it.
Which reminds me... recall/gate?
You can recall out of any situation, there are no limits at all. You may use a gate in any situation also, however the Gate Travel spell may not be cast inside dungeons.
Public Moongates?
There is no gump, the place where the moongate leads is determained by the phases of the moons. (as it was in the time period).
Can I gate monsters?
Yes monsters and other NPCs will travel through a moongate if they walk over it. Even though Gate Travel is not allowed in dungeons, you can still find monsters in the wild (even balrons and ancient wyrms) to gate where ever you like. If that′s your cup of tea.
Runebooks?
Nope.
Why can′t I gate in dungeons?
Official rules at the time stated you could only gate from the 1st level, and could not recall from the 3rd or below. We decided allowing all recall and no gating was a happy medium. Note that recall has a slight chance to "fail" in a dungeon, so while it can be used... it may take a few tries. Might not be so good for daring escapes, either."
